Not all Sonic FCs are recolors

Description

Quick edit: It just came to me that you can make a very creative and original story from a fan-made character (not that all of them are) And the traits/personality can also be interesting and creative. But the design of the character itself is not really original because of the fact of how similar of a wire-frame your using. End edit

Just a quick edit (submission day): It just came to me that this might be saying to accept a Sonic fan made character or like Sonic due to how insane the fandom gets. No I am not saying you have to like Sonic-fan made characters, just know what the difference is between a FC and a recolor.

Oh boy the recolor topic. Never thought I'd dabble into this one again and I'm probably going to get some disagreement on this one.

This does not go against anybody who is trying to prevent art theft on our site. This is more against the people who keep saying "Do something more original, recolors aren't original" or something among those lines.

Before actually saying that a FC is a recolor, actually know what a recolor is. A recolor is when you take any screenshot, manipulate and color over it, and say it's your own work. However, let's say if you took the Sonic model. You make him a different color (let's just say deep purple) you take no screenshots and simply draw him from a scratch. You give him another name and background story. Guess what? That doesn't violate any rules and that is what is considered a fan-made character. And it's just as unoriginal as giving a Yoshi hair to make your own Mario character which I'm not saying it's a bad thing but it's just the difference between a fan-character and an original-character.

I'm not trying to defend poorly developed characters. Let's say just making a character named Zonic, having a back story the same as shadow, and having the powers of Sonic and Knuckles combined. If it was made from scratch it's still not a recolor but I would hate more on the fact that it's a Mary-sue (even in the Sonic universe) and just something that was pulled out of someone's ass.

I also hate recolors who try to defend themselves all the time by trying to hide the fact that their character is a recolor by adding other features to the screenshot that's already stolen. "Oh look at me, I gave Sonic longer quills, it's not a recolor," it's still stolen artwork dumbass. If it derives from a screenshot, it's traced or edited without permission, then it's a recolor no matter you do to try and change it.

But somebody can make a Sonic FC if they really want to. Why? Because they enjoy it. As long as they aren't claiming it to be original or stealing another person's work. But I do hate the negativity around this topic begging recolors to have originality instead of just encouraging them to just stop art theft. Every Sonic character was built off a similar wire-frame so of course your going to see a resemblance to another character when you see a Sonic FC, but it just doesn't make it a recolor.

This is where I'm trying to get at
Recolor = Art theft (hate it for that)
Fan-character = unoriginal but acceptable (I don't mean to use unoriginal negatively, but it's just the truth. But it doesn't mean you can't have fun making work out of it.)
